12 Jan 2009: Top Tips for successful email newsletters

Email newsletters are an easy and cost effective way to stay in touch with your existing and potential customers over time. Regular contact of the right kind can help you add value, build trust and increase sales. If you are planning to use email newsletters to market your business, then here are three fundamentals to bear in mind:

  • Don’t Spam - Permission based marketing is the order of the day. We all hate spam email and the last thing you want to do is leave your prospective customers annoyed and feeling like you’ve invaded their personal space...and it’s illegal! For more on this, see our article on e-marketing and the law.

  • Build your mailing list - You need an individual’s consent to send them marketing emails so don’t miss the opportunity to get that permission. Give a clear and compelling opportunity to sign up via your website (can you offer an appropriate incentive?). When anyone new contacts your business be sure to invite them to receive your newsletter by email.

  • Be useful! - The longer someone stays subscribed to your mailing list the better. You risk losing subscribers if your emails are too ‘hard sell’ (unless the primary reason they signed up is to receive offers, discounts etc.). In most cases it is best to provide information that is genuinely useful to your subscribers. Informative articles, advice and product reviews can add real value and keep people interested. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and ask yourself if you would appreciate receiving the email you are planning to send.
